Safety in the building

The purpose: is to protect the building against the fires\r The main idea: is an Automatic emergency exit.\r When fires happen, the smoking detector works, giving sound and light.(signals)\r Then the emergency Exist opens automatically.

翻開東北角那一頁---和美一帶漸新統貝類化石排列方式和古水流關係之探討

This study tries to reveal how the velocity of flow influents the orientations and scattering patterns of the two-valve shells (we use Pecten in this study) during depositing processes by comparing the laboratory studies with the field observations. We learn from the laboratory experiments that the shells deposit at random directions when they are too crowded and are oriented to a certain direction when they are more scattered. We also find out that the shell fossils whose dorsal sides towards downstream with upward concaves are most likely to move. On the contrary, the shells whose dorsal sides towards upstream with downward concave are the most reluctant to move Examinations of the outcrop of the bedding of Pecten fossils, which are located near Long Dong, the northeastern tip of Taiwan, show that a lot of the shells settled along a certain direction and most of their concaves are upward. However, some of the shells with obvious orientation have downward concaves, which implies the depositional environments were under high current velocity. And the numbers of the shells whose dorsal sides are oriented to Northern East are about equal to those whose dorsal sides are oriented to Southern West. This result coincides with the results of the laboratory study. However, the experimental results can apply to the field analysis under certain assumptions.本研究就影響貝殼排列的水速作試驗,尋找水流和貝殼排列的關係,並和地層中實際的貝類化石做比較,藉以回推古老沉積環境。結果發現大量貝殼集中的情況下,貝殼間彼此的影響力會大於單純的水流沖擊;當貝殼較分散時,可以看出貝殼的頭部皆會一致朝向水流的來向作排列。而最適合移動的型態是凹口向上且頭部不朝水流來向的貝殼,而最穩定的型態是頭部朝水流來向的凹口向下貝殼。觀察實際地層,貝類化石大致上也有方向性的排列且正反面貝殼都有,可以推得當時沉積的水流大,故有足夠的動能讓貝殼重新排列。但由於試驗環境定和自然環境有所差異,仍有限制存在。

七星映月--都市靜水生態系連接度之模擬研究

目的:1. 以地理資訊系統分析臺北市靜水生態系的分布狀況;2. 分析靜水生態系的連接度。過程和結果:我實地踏察了臺北市區的381 個地點,在其中187 處發現224 個靜水生態系,首次統整出臺北市區靜水生態系的現況資料。靜水生態系的平均密度為0.82 個/km2,其密度與人口密度成正比。以 GIS 軟體標定這些水池,發現它們成任意或叢生分布。再以 VisualBasic 程式語言設計程式,以預測移動能力不同的濕地生物在這些靜水生態系間移動的情形。結論:由程式模擬可知,能在所紀錄地點間自由移動的濕地生物種類很少,顯示都市化對靜水生態系的隔絕效應。In a city, still water ecosystems (ponds and lakes) are divided by buildings and roads, so they are not continuous in the space. I surveyed 381 sites in Taipei City and found 224 ponds and lakes at 187 sites. The density of still water ecosystems is 0.82 per square kilometer. The density of still water ecosystems is higher in areas where more people live. I use a geographical information system software to mark the locations of these ponds. Their distribution is either random or clumped. I use Visual Basic to design a program to predict how do wetland creatures move among these sites. My program tells that very few creatures can move freely, indicating still water ecosystems in this city are quite isolated.

Effect of Salt Concentration on Evaporation of Sea Water

Every year more soluble and insoluble substances are added to the oceans by runoff. This process slowly increases the salinity of the oceans. As the salinity of the oceans increase, what effect will this have on our climate? The purpose of this investigation is to determine how an increase in salt concentration affects the evaporation of sea water. Four ten liter aquaria were filled with six liters of distilled water in each aquarium. One aquarium contained only water. The other three aquaria had different amounts of Kosher salt added as follows: 120. grams, 240.grams and 480.grams. Measurements of the level of water in each tank were taken over a period of two months. The tank with the highest concentration of salt had the smallest rate of evaporation. In the feature with less evaporation of sea water the atmosphere will receive less moisture. This could result in fewer clouds and less rain fall for the planet.

長期處理兒茶素對無機砷與氯化鎘之遺傳毒性

重金屬對人體傷害的無遠弗屆-人人皆知,根據流行病學的研究指出,長期處\r 在重金屬含量過高之地區,易造成生理病變。比方說,長期生活在砷含量高的環境\r 中,易導致肝臟、周邊血管及神經系的損害,各種癌症的發生機率也大為提高;長\r 期處在含量過高的鎘環境中,易引起不正常的鈣代謝﹐產生骨質疏鬆症、軟骨症、\r 糖尿、胺基尿酸、尿蛋白、貧血、和肝功能異常的症狀;而目前坊間所看到各類茶\r 品中含有的兒茶素則被發現具有抗氧化、抗突變及清除自由基等功能。故本實驗以\r 人類胃癌細胞(SC-M1)為材料,以微核(micronuclei)偵測技術觀察細胞長期處理兒茶\r 素((-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, EGCG)後,對於亞砷酸鈉(sodium arsenite, NaAsO?)\r 及氯化鎘(cadmium chloride, CdCl?)所造成的細胞遺傳毒性有何影響。另一方面則利\r 用SRB 分析法測量細胞存活率,探討長期處理兒茶素後,亞砷酸鈉及氯化鎘對於細\r 胞的毒殺情況是否改變。實驗結果顯示細胞長期處理兒茶素不會造成微核的增加,\r 但是卻會增加細胞的存活率;單獨處理亞砷酸鈉和氯化鎘則都會使細胞中微核明顯\r 的增加,且會降低細胞的存活率;而長期處理兒茶素的細胞對亞砷酸鈉所誘發的微\r 核有抑制作用且會增加細胞對於亞砷酸鈉的耐受度,長期處理兒茶素無法抑制氯化\r 鎘所誘發的微核與細胞毒性。\r \r \r It is well documented that exposure to heavy metals could cause seriously adverse\r effects to humans. Epidemiological evidence has shown that illness is frequently\r observed in residents living long-term in heavy metal contaminated area. For example,\r long-term exposure of arsenic was associated with increased incidences of liver diseases,\r peripheral vascular and neurological diseases, as well as cancers. And long-term exposed\r to cadmium may lead to abnormal metabolism of calcium, osteoporosis, osteomalacia,\r glucouria, aminoaciduria, proteinuria, anemia and abnormal liver function. Recently,\r numerous reports have shown that (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major\r polyphenol from green tea, have ability to anti-oxidative stress and anti-mutagenesis. In\r this report, we investigated the effects of EGCG long-term exposure in sodium arsenite\r and cadmium chloride induces chromosomal damages and cytotoxicity in a gastric cancer\r cell line, SC-M1. Our present results demonstrated cells long-term exposure to EGCG did\r not induce micronuclei (MN) formation but induce the growth rate. Sodium arsenite or\r cadmium chloride alone significantly induced MN formation and cytotoxicity in cells\r without long-term EGCG exposure. However, long-term treatment of SC-M1 cells with\r EGCG significantly reduced MN formation and protects the cells from cytotoxicity\r induced by arsenite. Long-term exposure of EGCG had no effect on MN induction and\r cell survival in cadmium-treated SC-M1 cells.

植物的彩妝

我們的研究報告,是對校園中所種植的各種變葉木所做的一個研究,經過一連串的實驗證明後,我們確信花青素對變葉木的光合作用會有所影響。接著,我們測定出未氧化的植物色素與已氧化的植物色素吸光能力有很大的差異,我們假設花青素可以吸收某些特定波長的光以防止植物色素的氧化程度過強,實驗後證明我們的假設是正確的。另一方面,我們預期花青素具有保溫的機制,故設計了一個在低溫下花青素可保溫的實驗以證明之,結果和我們的假設相符合。我們預期花青素可利用保溫的特性降低植物因低溫所造成的傷害,減少農業上的損失。This study is about the Codiaeum variegatum which is grown on campus. After a series of experiments, it was proved that “anthocyanin” has a significant influence on the photosynthesis processing in Codiaeum variegatum. A great difference in the pigment of plant’s light-absorbing ability between the oxidized plants and the non-oxidized ones was also found in the experiments. Therefore, it was supposed that anthocyanin could absorb some special range of wavelength to avoid the pigment of plant to over-oxidize. The result of this experiment is in accordance with our supposition. In addition, we anticipated that anthocyanin has the ability to stay warm. By a designed experiment we successfully found that the result is exactly the same as our assumption. According to the findings of our study, we expect the characteristic -- ”staying warm” of anthocyanin could be applicable to decrease the harm to plants caused by the low temperature, and thereby to reduce the loss in agriculture.

二次函數上正三角形建構之研究及探討

在拋物線上置掛正三角形看似簡單,其實不然。本篇文章研究在二次函數的各種不同情況下,可做正三角形的分佈以及其個數。 1. 在一條拋物線上時,最多只能作正三角形。 4. 在三條對稱軸相等的拋物線和共頂點開口大小不同之拋物線上,本篇文章證明一定能找出正三角形落在它們之上。但由於最多有四個分界點,要解四次方乘組過於繁複,於是本篇文章對分界點作了一些估計,找出了分界點的極限值。 5. 本篇文章證明了對於給定的正n 邊形,存在一1 元n-1 次方程式可以通過它所有頂點。 Building a regular triangle on a parabolic curve looks easy . In fact , it doesn’t . This Article researches regular triangles distributions and its numbers in different conditions. 1. On one parabolic curve can only build regular triangles , squares and other regular polygons can’t be built. 4. For three parabolic curves which has same symmetrical axis or three concurrent parabolic curves, we prove that it can build at least one regular triangle on them .But because it can have at most 4 boundary points, to solve quartic equation is to complicated. So we do some estimation of boundary points, and find out some limits. 5. This Article prove that for given regular polygons , there exists a one dimension n-1 orders equation can pass all its apexes.

Self Assembly Mechanism of Water Droplets

這是一系列關於水蒸氣冷凝為極細微水珠的實驗。其中可以歸納為三大部分,第一部分是基礎實驗,將水蒸氣導引至親水性介面上,觀察冷凝水珠的結構。雖然看似簡單平常,但是卻發現:不同溫度的水蒸氣,其冷凝最初始的細微珠粒,尺寸相同;爾後溫度高者,堆疊速率較大,以至於最後同時呈現的水珠大小不一,尺寸不同! 第二部分,是針對冷凝水珠自我組裝機制的探討。實驗是將水蒸氣導引至密度小於1的高分子溶液上,並藉由揮發性溶劑快速揮發,將水珠粒「分層保留」以便更深入了解「解構」後的水珠群聚機制。在這組實驗中得到兩張有趣的圖片: 在討論時,我是從對流機制切入,嘗試解構上面兩張圖。 第三部分的實驗,是將水蒸氣導引到磁場及靜電場上,觀察冷凝的機構。這部分呈現出來的結果,推翻了一般「水分子為電中性應該在電場與磁場中不受影響?」刻板觀念,實驗呈現水分子:不但在電磁場上不易長大同時也有固定的散佈模式(assembly pattern)。同時也觀察到:水分子在正電場形成的凝結水珠較為均勻,在負電場則表現出較大親水性特質。這部分的實驗對日後研究細胞膜上水分子通道應有助益。 I have tried to ask a famous math professor if he can create a formula describing the ordered array of water droplets. “Then, I should study Physics first!” He said. Condensation is the thing we live with, being found everywhere, passing without notice. But we never know when it dose start? By coalescence, water droplets grow bigger, but are not round again. We used the polymer film as template and designed the solution lighter than water, so the minute droplets will sink to the bottom and layer by layer. After seconds we may have multilayers of ordered array. This experiment presented here is actually the diary of the growth of water droplets through condensation, upon volatile fluid, magnetic field and electric field. Through convection, it discusses the self assembly mechanism of water droplets and peep into the uniformity of the size of water droplets. In this experiment, convection and magneto-electric force did play important roles in the self assembly mechanism of water droplets. The topic is mostly concerned as we are surrounded by magneto-electric waves in today’s world. This is the first step in discovering the homogeneous state of water droplets, providing insights into the self assembly mechanism of water droplets with nano sizes.

A Novel Approach of Gene Knockdown in Zebrafish through Targeted mRNA Cleavage

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a popular model organism used for elucidating complex\r developmental pathways and processes. Although the Zebrafish Genome Project is\r nearing completion, the function of most genes remains to be discovered. In zebrafish,\r where an efficient gene targeting method is still absent, costly Morpholinos (MOs) have\r been widely used to ‘knockdown’ specific genes.
