多變色膽固醇型液晶面板之研發

多變色膽固醇型液晶面板為利用具雙穩態(Bistable)特性及因螺距不同而反射特定波長的膽固醇型液晶(CLC)。本研究創新作法為二:一、利用固化的方式使膽固醇型液晶螺距大小不同,使變色機制不同於一般電腦液晶面板,所製的液晶面板為以液晶的特性變色。二、將液晶螢幕中控制液晶的IPS 系統、側邊電極應用於液晶白板中。雙層液晶白板上層為混合E7(向列型液晶)+S811(旋光物質)的Bistable CLC,下層為混合RM82、CB15、BL006、I-369 的多變色(Multi-color)CLC 面板。The main purpose of the research plan lies in the application of the CLC. By using the Cholesteric -the bistable and the wavelength due to different pitch sizes- we can make liquid crystal whiteboard. First, by heating and curing, we are able to cause the pitch sizes of CLC to be different. Unlike the commonly used LCD in computers, the features of CLC itself are applied to the color changing mechanism we make. Second, we apply the IPS horizontal electric field and flank electrode to our LCD whiteboard. In making the Multi-color CLC Display, we mix RM82, CB15 and BL006.

NICE數-正方形與正立方體的切割

源自於Thinking Mathematically這本書的一道題目, 關於正方形的切割問題:將一個正方形切成不重疊的正方形, 所得的個數就可被稱作NICE(好的), 問有哪些數是NICE數? 在平面的正方形切割的問題, 透過分割技巧, 我們得出了重要的結果:除了2、3、5以外的自然數都是NICE數, 並推導出:若k為NICE數, m為自然數, 則k+3m為NICE數。我們將問題推廣至立方體:將一個正方體切成不重疊的正方體, 所得的個數就可被稱作very NICE(非常好的), 問有哪些數是very NICE數?我們也得出重要的結果:大於47的自然數皆為very NICE數, 並推導出:若 是very NICE數, 且m是自然數, 則k+7m為very NICE數。

見微知「駐」-水珠律動與圓駐波

It is always fascinating to see water droplet’s dancing around on a Japanese teppanyaki hotplate surface. The water usually does not evaporate immediately, but form interesting shapes, dance around and follow by evaporation of gaseous water and disappear. In this experiment, we designed a very simple experimental set-up to observe the little water droplets dancing on a heated hotplate. A homemade stainless plate and a small heater attached to the plate, and a thermal couple was assembled. With this simple setup, we observed the variation of water droplet’s shape as a function of the hotplate temperatures. The temperature of the water droplets, the duration of the water on the hotplate, and the shape number were measured. The shape formation mechanism was proposed. We found when the water droplet was subject to high heat due to the contact of the surface and the hotplate, the abrupt evaporation of the water molecules and violent vibration cause the formation of the various shapes to reach thermal equilibrium; the number of the shapes and the oscillation can be described by Laplace’s equation,Using a high-speed camera, we found the higher the temperature of the water, the more variations of the water droplet shapes can be observed. Automatic Sterilization System for Operating Rooms?

The ASSOR is a device that allow to perform the sterilization function in hospital areas, the most important sectors of the hospital where it is required to implement this type of systems are the operating rooms, intensive cares, baby care, pathology, etc. The principle of the present project is a system that enables or either disables a valve that allows the fluid of the product, antiseptic or sterilizing, inside the room to be sterilized. The main application of this system is, after the manual cleansing of the room, in a control board, the procedure is turned on. The ASSOR consists, in general, of an electro valve that controls the fluid of the antiseptic into the room, a fan system, the electronic control circuit for the application of the product and electronic circuit to have a synchronized control of the system, and finally the product application in the target room.

Developing Swarm Intelligence with Flying Robots for Life Saving

Purpose of the research I had a bicycle accident eight months ago and I suffered an opened humeral fracture. I wasn’t able to get up on my feet, I had to suffer on the ground while a couple accidentally walked there, and they called the emergency services, I lost a lot of blood and the doctors had to cut a small piece of muscle out of my biceps. Now this shouldn’t have happened if there were a faster method on making first aid. Example an intelligent flying robot could easily handle this situation. Procedures There is a hexcopter and a quadcopter. Both of them has cameras with live image transmissions in Full HD and they also have GPS. They are equipped with a lot of sensors (image recognition with Raspberry Pi, 6 axis distance sensors, long range communication modules) and with these they are able to solve problems just a bird or a human does. These drones can communicate up to 1.8 kilometers, they communicate with the main server, they share their knowledge with each other and this way they can learn about the world and about the terrain that surrounds them. In a very basic way they are able to learn… Each time they make their flying techniques smoother and their database is growing. These drones can cooperate and save lives faster than humans do. They are also able to fly in non-accessible zones by themselves with no human help. For example with their sensors they can fly in and map buildings that are inaccessible for people. They can also do artificial farming with their object recognizing features, like recognizing plants and colors. (Right now they are calibrated to look for survivors alone in the mountains/forests.) They go to a given GPS coordinate then they are flying in a spiral form to find the injured people in less than a half hour. I really hope that one day these flying intelligent machines will save lives! Note: (I probably can only take one drone with myself to Taiwan, because of the traveling restrictions on planes.)

含環胺-亞胺雙牙配基及其鎳錯合物的合成、結構鑑定,及烯烴催化聚合反應

本研究合成含環形胺—亞胺雙牙配基鎳金屬催化劑,用以催化烯烴聚合反應。將2-甲基丙醛經由溴化、胺化及亞胺化的步驟合成含胺—亞胺的雙牙配基,Et2NCMe2CH=N(2,6-iPr2C6H3) (3a)、(c-C4H8)N- CMe2CH=NPh (3b)、RNCMe2CH=N(2,6-Me2C6H3) (R = c-C4H8 3c,c-C5H10 3d)。再將配基和Ni(DME)Br2 (DME = 1,2- 二甲烷氧基乙烷) 反應, 形成鎳金屬錯合物Ni [Et2NCMe2CH=N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]Br2 (4a)、Ni[RNCMe2CH=N (2,6-Me2C6H3)]Br2 (R = c-C4H8 4c,c-C5H10 4d),並作結構鑑定。其中3b、3c、3d、4c、4d 均為合成的新化合物,4d 獲得X 光單晶繞射結構。 以合成之鎳錯合物作為催化劑,催化乙烯或降冰片烯(C7H10)的聚合反應,探討反應活性和高分子產物的性質。與含相同碳數的錯合物比較,在胺基具環形取代基的錯合物對乙烯的催化活性較佳,聚乙烯產物分子量較高,分子量分布範圍狹窄;其對降冰片烯的催化活性略遜於非環形者。同為環形取代基時,六環較五環者對乙烯的催化活性較差,但對降冰片烯的催化活性較佳。顯示乙烯聚合與降冰片烯聚合有不同的反應決定步驟。催化劑及配基的設計的確可以操控聚合反應及其高分子產物的性質。 The synthesis of α-amino aldeimines Et2NCMe2CH=N(2,6-iPr2C6H3) (3a), (c-C4H8)NC Me2CH=NPh (3b), RNCMe2CH=N(2,6-Me2C6H3) (R = c-C4H8 3c,c-C5H10 3d), as well as the nickel complexes Ni [Et2NCMe2C- H=N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)]Br2 (4a), Ni[RNCMe2CH=N (2,6-Me2C6H3)]Br2 (R = c-C4H8 4c,c-C5H10 4d) has been succeeded. Their structures were mainly determi ned by spectroscopy or elemental analysis. The complex 4d was characterized by X-ray crysta llographic analysis. It shows that the nickel complex has distorted tetrahedral configuration. The catalytic reactions of ethylene or norbornene polymerization using the newly synthesized nickel complexes are studied. All catalyts show high activity toward studied olefin polymerization. Comparing the data of the catalytic ethylene polymerization for complex 4c with those of its isomer complex 4a, the former is found to results in higher activity as well as the larger molecular weight of the PE products with the narrower dispersity. On the contrary, 4c shows lower activity in the reactions of norbornene polymerization than 4a. For the cyclic amine derivatives, 4c of five-membered amino group shows better catalytic activity toward ethylene polymerization than 4d of six-membered amino group. But 4d gives better perfomance for norbornene polymerization than 4c. Such results indicate that the processes of ethylene and norbornene polymerization might have different rate-determining steps. These study confirms that the design of ligand and catalyst are crucial with respect to the control of the catalytic olefin polymerization and the properties of the polymeric products.

稀子蕨的生殖策略探討

稀子蕨(Monachosorum henryi Christ)生長在台灣中海拔山區,是少數具有特殊生殖方式(不定芽)的蕨類。本研究對東眼山的稀子蕨族群進行物候調查,以了解其進行孢子繁殖及不定芽繁殖的過程,並試圖探討稀子蕨的不定芽是否可增加其族群對環境的適應性。研究結果顯示稀子蕨的孢子體及原葉體都無法在乾旱的環境下生存,常有大規模乾死的現象;而其不定芽則具有很強的耐旱性,無論是在季節普遍性及幼苖發育程度上,生殖芽都比孢子繁殖較佔優勢。而且其不定芽於旱季結束後,可迅速萌發,長出的孢子葉可隨之進行有性(孢子)及無性(不定芽)生殖,使其族群不至於在旱季中有地區性滅絕之虞。;Monachosorum henryi Christ , which exists in the middle elevations of the mountainous regions of Taiwan, is a fern with a special reproductive system seldom found in other ferns.This study investigates the phenology of Monachosorum henryi population in the Don Yang mountain region. Its purpose is to understand the sexual and asexual reproductive cycles of these ferns and to interpret whether or not the buds can increase the fitness of their population during the dry season.The results show that it is extremely difficult for the sporophyte and prothallus of Monachosorum henryi to survive in a drought. However, the buds have a much stronger drought endurance. According to this investigation, the adventitious buds of Monachosorum henryi are superior to the spores in seedling development in every season. Adventitious buds are able to germinate soon after the dry season as well as in any other season, and are able to grow spores and buds on their fronds enabling both a sexual and asexual way of proliferation. In this way the fern avoids a district extinction of their population.

淨化我們喝的水-經濟方便的再生過濾器雛型

近年來由於土地過度開發,經常發生土石流,使得自來水廠進水混濁度太高,過濾設施無法正常運作,本實驗裝置可以利用氣昇?和重力作用,來清洗濾層中殘留物物比重較大的雜質,而且濾砂含自動控制昇?還可以重覆使用,如此便能先處理河川中大量的河水。整個過濾器主要分三個部分;(1)下端進水處理處為高比重的雜質重力沉澱處。(2)圓錐狀的濾層以利於自動清洗時砂層的循環。(3)自動清洗監控部分。濾砂清洗的影響因子為濾層厚度的重力、氣昇?壓力含進水量三者交互作用。濾砂以硬度大的石英砂最佳,濾層高度為25cm,平均進水量0.23升/秒,為最佳處理狀態可獲得原水78.5%的乾淨濾液。Debris flow occurs frequently due to the over-development of watershed recently. The water used as the input of water treatment factory is too turbid to be filtered by the traditional facilities. In this study on experimental apparatus was designed to remove the high density particles or suspended impurities. This apparatus can be used as a pretreatment apparatus of filtering factory. There are three main parts in own apparatus: (1) The precipitation one which is the site for precipitating of high specific gravity impurities (2) Cone shape filter layers which allows for cycle cleaning the sand layers (3) The automatic monitoring apparatus. The effet of water flow rate, air pressure, gravity and the height of filter layer on the performance of the experiment were discussed in this study. Experimental results showed that in the study, the height of filter layers is 25 cm, and the average water volume flow rate is 0.23 liter/sec. The apparatus can achieve a 78.5% leaner filtrate from the original water sample.

一滴溶液的顯微電解世界

Whe we think of chemistry experiments in schools from the view of environmental\r protection, microscopic chemistry experiment with reduced quantity and waste is\r the trend for experiments in the future. It is also the target that everybody shall\r aim for. After many failures and instructions from teachers, I finally successfully\r performed electrolysis of the most micro-volume of one-drop solution. It was also\r unbelievable to perform quantitative test within the electrolysis time of color\r disappear from the blue cupic sulfate solution. \r To clearly see the one-drop solution electrolysis, instrument starts from magnifier\r to self-assembled micro project, then upgraded to the miro-visual screen. It not\r only can record,also plays/shows in the computer. Most importantly, it is the most\r environmental protection effective and also zero pollution microsopic chemistry\r experiment. It is obviously a target of future development trend. \r 我們從環境保護的角度去思考常校的化學實驗時,減量減廢的微型化學實驗已是未來實驗的趨勢,也是大家應共同努力的目標。在多次失敗及老師的啟發下,我終於成功的做到電解最微量的一滴溶液。對於從藍色硫酸銅溶液顏色消失的電解時間裡,還可做定量的檢定感到不可思議! \r 為了更清楚看到一滴溶液的電解情形,儀器的設計由放大鏡到自組顯微投影機,最後進階到顯微視訊的畫面,它不但可記錄下來,而且可在電腦中播放。最重要的是:最環保也最接近零污染的顯微化學實驗,已然是未來可發展下去的目標。

Discovery of new bioactivities of violacein and its erivatives synthesized by Chromobacterium sp.

目的:紫色桿菌(Chromobacterium sp.)是一種生活在土壤及水域環境的革蘭氏陰性菌,它會產生紫黑色的紫色桿菌素(Violacein),因而使菌體與培養液皆呈紫色。Violacein是一種由兩個L-色胺酸(L-tryptophan)分子所聚合成的五環化合物,已被證實具有抗菌以及抑制腫瘤細胞生長的活性。本實驗的目的在探討紫色桿菌是否會利用不同官能基的L-色胺酸,合成不同的Violacein衍生物,並分析這些Violacein衍生物的生物活性。方法:將紫色桿菌培養於液態LB培養基中,分別加入不同濃度的L-tryptophan、1-CH3-L-tryptophan與5-OH-L-tryptophan,於室溫下培養48小時,再用乙酸乙酯萃取Violacein及其衍生物,將萃取出來的紫色桿菌素,用紫外光/可見光分光光譜計和質譜儀進行分析。最後,再將這些萃取物打入斑馬魚受精卵做胚胎毒性測試,並進行試管外DNA剪切能力分析。結果:加入不同官能基的L-色胺酸所合成的產物都是紫色,且在紫外光/可見光的光譜中的最大吸收波長皆相同,質譜儀分析結果則顯示,L-tryptophan 、與5-OH-L-tryptophan的產物圖譜不同、而1-CH3-L-tryptophan的產物則無法分析。斑馬魚胚胎毒性測試結果顯示,Violaecein和1-CH3-Violacein 不會對胚胎發育造成影響,但是5-OH-Violacein則會造成胚胎發育異常。DNA 剪切能力測試也顯示,只有5-OH-Violacein具有剪切DNA的能力,其他則否。重要性:本實驗成功地利用紫色桿菌合成Violacein及其衍生物,並發現了5-OH-Violacein比Violacein 具有更高的生物活性。;Aims: Chromobacterium sp. is a Gram negative bacterium which inhabit in soil and water environments. Chromobacterium produce a purple color compound named Violacein. This colorful compound makes Chromobacterium and its culture mediumin purple color. Violacein is a five rings compound synthesized from two L-tryptophan molecules. Studies have shown that Violacein has anti-bacteria and anti-tumor activities. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether Violacein can be synthesized from different tryptophan analogues, and whether these Violacein derivatives have different bioactivities. Materials and Methods: Chromobacterium sp. was cultured in liquid medium containing different concentrations of L-tryptophan, 1-CH3-L-tryptophan, and 5-OH-L-tryptophan. After 48 hours incubation at room temperature, Violacein and its derivatives were extracted by EA, analyzed by UV/visible spectrophotometer and MS. Violacein and its derivatives were also tested for their embryo toxicity and DNA cleavage activity in vitro. Results: The compounds synthesized from different tryptophan analogues were all purple and have the same maxima absorption wave length in the UV/visible spectra. However, MS spectra of compounds synthesized from L-tryptophan and 5-OH-L-tryptophan were different. The results of zebrafish embryo toxicity tests indicated that violaecin and 1-CH3-Violacein had no effect on embryo development, but 5-OH-Violacein caused development defects. DNA cleavage tests also showed that only 5-OH-Violacein could digest DNA in vitro. Violaecin and 1-CH3-Violacein could not digest DNA. Significances: Results from this study indicate that Chromobacterium sp. can be used to synthesize Violacein derivatives from different tryptophan analogues, and revealed that 5-OH-Violacein is a higher bioactivity compound than violaecein.

澱粉?抑制劑之研究

植物合成澱粉?抑制劑可以對抗動物的取食,國外實驗證明數種澱粉?抑制劑對害蟲防 治具有顯著效果,其中以腰豆(Phaseolus vulgaris)研究最多。我們利用5% T.C.A.進行粗萃,從台灣常見豆類中篩選出四季豆(與腰豆同種不同品系)與菜豆,對麗蠅的澱粉?具有明顯的抑制效果,對豬胰臟與黃豆澱粉?的抑制效果則小或無,此種抑制特異性深具害蟲防治的潛力。經由溫度與pH 的試驗發現粗萃中的澱粉?抑制劑成分應為蛋白質。我們以四季豆作為繼續研究的對象,將粗萃進一步純化,經由陰離子交換與膠體過濾層析,分離出單一蛋白質,經蛋 白質定序比對確認其可能為國外發表的腰豆澱粉?抑制劑—αAI-1。經由測試發現此抑制劑在 85℃時仍能抑制果蠅澱粉?,為一相當穩定的蛋白質;且抑制劑的作用受pH 值影響很大,在偏酸性環境下的效果最好,與昆蟲分泌澱粉?的部位亦為酸性環境有相當密切的關聯;且其 抑制作用具特異性,可明顯抑制果蠅、入侵紅火蟻、白蟻、蟑螂及麵包蟲等昆蟲的澱粉?活性,對人類唾液、豬胰臟、四季豆本身及黃豆澱粉?的抑制效果很小或無,值得繼續深入研究。 Plant amylase inhibitors can fight against predation from plant-eating animals. It has been reported that several amylase inhibitors have an obvious effect on pest control; among them that from Phaseolus vulgaris got the most surveyed. 5% T.C.A was employed to make crude extracts. We have screened the amylase inhibitor activities from crude extract among beans common in Taiwan. The inhibitors from both string beans (the different strain of Phaseolus vulgaris) and cowpea notably inhibited the amylases in Chrysomia megacephala, but little or no inhibition in porcine pancreas and soy bean. This specific inhibition behavior suggested strong potential in pest control. Its activity can be affected by temperature and pH suggested that amylase inhibitors in crude extracts should be proteins. String beans were chosen to be further purified from the crude extracts. A single protein was isolated after ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography. Through protein sequencing, the partial amino acid sequences were highly homologous to that ofαAI-1 from Phaseolus vulgaris, indicating it might beαAI-1. The purified protein still can inhibit the amylase from Drosophila melanogaster at 85℃, suggesting it is thermal-stable. Its activity was affected by pH and reached the peak in weak acidic environment, which might be related to the fact that amylases are secreted in acidic environment of insect’s midgut. It obviously inhibited the amylases from D. melanogaster,Solenopsis invicta, Odontotermes formosanus, Periplaneta Americana Linnaeus, and Alphitobius sp., while not to human saliva, porcine pancreas, soy bean and string beans itself. The unique pattern of inhibition activities of the purified amylase inhibitor was worthy of further anlysis.

Super Oil Absorbent Form Rubber Waste

There are three main threats that give disastrous outcomes to the ecosystem, oil spill in the open sea, non-biodegradable wrapping plastics and logging to accommodate the paper industry. The current oil absorbent available in the market nowadays are more of fibers with hydrophilic characteristics. As a result, the oil been absorbed cannot be reused and causing total lost to the oil companies. It is estimates that billions of Malaysian Ringgit(RM) lost due to this cause for the past ten years.\r The objective of this project is to produce oil absorbent that not only created from the Empty Fruit Bunch(EFB) as a recycling initiative but at the same time able to reuse back all the absorbed oil after that. On top of that to this, we also hope to produce a biodegradable wrapping paper from the same material.\r The initial step towards the production of this eco-absorbent is known as Compounding Process which involves the grinding of the EFB along with some used rubber. This is then followed by adding flour to the mixture and then cooked until it is matured. At the end of this process, the product is grinded into refined form. Based on the investigations conducted, this eco-absorbent able to absorb oil five times of its weight and using a minimal pressure, the absorbed oil can be recollected back hence use onwards without changing the oil physical or chemical properties.\r On the other hand, the eco-friendly wrapping paper made out of the same material also showed high durability and tensile index. In addition to this it also showed high flexibility folding index which enables this wrapping paper to be shaped and folded into various forms according to the customer needs. All of these positives characteristics suggest that this eco-friendly wrapping paper able to replace the conventional plastic wrapping paper available in the market nowadays.\r In conclusion, we are one step closer in reducing the environmental pollution by using the EFB to produce the eco-oil absorbent and wrapping paper that it’s not only stressed on recycling the waste materials and precious oil resources but at the same time helps to save billions of Ringgit by the oil companies.
